Public School, 11 And 11A School Street, Markinch

The building at 11 and 11A School Street in Markinch is a public school designed by Robert Hutchison, constructed in 1825 and 1835, possibly on the site of an 18th-century school. It is a single-storey, seven-bay pair of cottages that served as the former school and the schoolmaster's house, featuring a piended extension at the rear. The exterior is made of coursed, droved, and squared sandstone, with random rubble on the sides and rear, and large droved long and short quoins. There is an eaves course along the top.

The south elevation, which serves as the entrance, is nearly symmetrical. It has a window slightly off-centre to the left, flanked by doors on both sides, each with windows beside them. The doors are boarded and have plate glass fanlights above. The windows feature a 24-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case style. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped ashlar stacks with some cans, along with ashlar coped skews and scroll skewputts. Decorative cast-iron downpipes with rainwater hoppers are also present.

Surrounding the property is a semicircular coped rubble boundary wall.
