Description

41 Commercial Street in Markinch is an early 19th-century single-storey cottage with an attic, featuring three bays, along with a single bay that may have been a former shop. The building is constructed of squared and coursed sandstone, with rubble on the sides and rear, and has stone cills and a broad eaves course.

On the east elevation, the entrance to No 41 has a timber door with a plate glass letterbox fanlight to the left, and a blocked window to the right, with a single relieving arch above. There is a slate-hung piended stone dormer window at the center, breaking the eaves above. No 43, which is symmetrical, has a timber door with a plate glass letterbox fanlight at the center and blocked windows in the flanking bays, with dormer windows similar to those of No 41 over the outer bays.

The west elevation features a lower single-storey lean-to extension on the outer left side of No 43. The dormer windows have a 12-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case style. The roof is covered with red pantiles, complemented by slate easing courses and slate dormers. Coped ashlar stacks with some cans and ashlar coped skews are also present.
