Description

38 Commercial Street in Markinch is an earlier 19th-century house that appears to incorporate some earlier materials. This semi-derelict, two-storey, three-bay building has a rectangular plan and features a piend roof. The exterior is made of squared and coursed whinstone and harl, with droved ashlar long and short quoins and raised margins, and an eaves course.

The west elevation facing the street is symmetrical, with three windows on the ground floor; the centre window has been altered from a door. The first floor has regular windows, and there is a prominent shouldered wallhead stack with an oculus in the centre.

The south elevation, which faces a close, is also symmetrical. It features a two-leaf boarded timber door with a fanlight at the centre, flanked by windows, and three regular windows on the first floor.

On the north elevation, there is a blocked former window off-centre to the left, with an adjacent timber-blocked window to the left and a small window on the first floor off-centre to the left.

The east elevation is blank. The first-floor window on the north elevation has a 12-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case, while the remaining openings are either boarded or empty. The roof is covered with grey slates, and the building has coped ashlar stacks with ashlar coped skews and a ropework scrolled skewputt to the southeast.

Additionally, there is a coped rubble boundary wall to the northwest.
