Description

This building at 33 Commercial Street in Markinch is an earlier 19th-century single-storey cottage with an attic, featuring three bays and situated in an irregular terrace to the west and north. The structure is made of squared and coursed droved sandstone, with random rubble on the east side and painted cement render on the north, complemented by stone cills. It has a droved base course and eaves course, along with stone mullions.

On the south elevation, which serves as the entrance, there is a central two-leaf panelled timber door with a letterbox fanlight above it. To the right, there is a window, and to the left, a later bipartite window. The first floor features a piended stone dormer window at the center and another in the bay to the right, with a later bipartite dormer window in the bay to the left of center, all of which break the eaves.

The east elevation, facing the street, has a window to the right of center at ground level, along with additional windows to the right and left that break into the gablehead.

On the north elevation, there is a two-storey building adjoining at the center and right, with a small window located off-center to the left. The first floor on the east side features a 12-pane glazing pattern, while the center and right on the south side at attic level have a similar pattern. The windows generally consist of 2-pane and 4-pane upper sashes with plate glass lower sashes, except on the north side where there is a blocked upper sash above a plate glass lower sash. All windows are in timber sash and case style. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and there are coped ashlar stacks and ashlar coped skews with ropework scroll skewputts.
