Description

The Church Hall on Kirk Street, Markinch, was designed by James Gillespie & Scott and built in 1931, with alterations made in 1936. The building is a tall, single-storey structure with seven bays, situated on a sloping ground to the west. The exterior is harled, with decorative stone margins around the windows and stone sills. The windows are round-headed, with architraves, hoodmolds, and stone mullions.

The east elevation features a low-pitched, gabled porch that breaks the roofline to the outer left. This porch has a four-pane glazed canopy supported by raked piers, with the one on the right extending beyond the eaves and topped with a pyramidal coping over a carved stone cross. The entrance is a two-leaf, partially glazed panelled timber door. Four windows are positioned to the right, separated by buttresses. A slightly advanced dormer gablet with a hoodmoulded, round-headed window also breaks the eaves, extending further beyond. To the outer right is a lower, piended bay with two small windows. Steps lead to a timber door in a flat-roofed extension to the right, with another small window on the return to the left, overlooking a small lean-to porch with a timber door in the re-entrant angle.

The west elevation is dominated by a canted stair turret to the outer right, with steps leading to a two-leaf, partially glazed timber door and flanking low, coped piers. A round-headed window sits above the door, and a mutuled cornice features a deep blocking course. The return to the left has narrow windows at ground and first floor levels. Four windows are present to the left, separated by buttresses, and a hoodmoulded, round-headed window is located in a dormer gablet that breaks the eaves over a projecting, flat-roofed extension with a corner buttress to the right, a timber door and a low buttress to the left, and a tripartite window above. A projecting gable to the outer left features a timber door to the right, an adjacent window to the left, and a brick wall abutting beyond. A further window is located at gablehead.

The south elevation has two small round-headed windows at ground level over a deep plinth, and a round-headed, architraved tripartite window with dividing pilasters and square capitals above. A carved cross is positioned in the gablehead. A slightly recessed link section to the left features a ground-floor window and a small window above, with a dividing buttress giving way to a flat-roofed stair turret at the outer left, with a small window at ground level and a narrow stair window above.

The windows have leaded, small-pane glazing, with some coloured panes. The roof is covered with purple slates. The building has harled stacks with cans and cast-iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hoppers.

The interior features an open-beam ceiling, a boarded timber dado, a gallery to the south, and a stage to the north.
