Description

The Session House at St Drostan's Parish Church in Markinch was designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson in 1879, incorporating parts of an early medieval church, with minor additions made by James Gillespie & Scott in 1915. This single-storey building features a crowstepped design and is located at the northern boundary of the churchyard, on sloping ground.

The exterior is constructed from squared and snecked rubble with ashlar dressings. The west elevation, which serves as the entrance, has a crowstepped gable end that includes a medieval niche with a foliate capital, likely from the 13th century, supporting a round-headed glazed niche with a roll-moulded surround beneath a late medieval crown canopy. To the right of this niche is a timber door set in a shouldered doorcase, with a churchyard gate to the left and a louvred arrow slit at the gablehead.

The south elevation features four irregularly placed windows, with a gas meter box located beneath the window in the left bay. The north elevation has a window on both the outer right and left sides. The east elevation includes a timber door in a wide square-headed doorcase, which has been altered, positioned below a small fanlight and relieving arch, along with another louvred arrow slit at the gablehead.

The building has a mix of 8- and 16-pane glazing in its timber sash and case windows, while the fixed niche window has a 9-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and there is a coped ashlar stack with cast-iron downpipes and decorative rainwater hoppers.

Inside, the principal room features an open-beam ceiling.
