St Rule Club, 11-12 The Links, St Andrews

The St Rule Club, located at 11-12 The Links in St Andrews, was designed by James Gillespie and Scott between 1892 and 1894. This building is a three-storey and attic structure featuring three bays and is part of an irregular terrace. It is constructed from ashlar stone and includes moulded string and cill courses, an eaves cornice with a blocking course, and stone mullions.

The principal elevation showcases a full-height canted bay at the center, which contains tripartite windows on each floor. To the right, there is a recessed corner with a porch supported by a square-section column at the ground level, leading to a bowed bay with bipartite windows above. On the left side, there is a window at the ground level accompanied by a narrow pend to the outer left, a tripartite window on the first floor, and a single window on the second floor, topped by a pedimented timber dormer. The windows feature plate glass glazing in timber sash and case frames. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there is a cavetto-coped shouldered ashlar stack with cans, along with a cast-iron downpipe that has a decorative rainwater hopper. The rear elevation and east gable are made of squared rubble, with the east gable featuring a recessed bay.

Inside, there is a square stairwell that rises the full height of the building, adorned with barley twist cast-iron balusters and a curving timber handrail. At the top of the stairwell, there is a lantern cupola with an internal oculus window. The principal ground floor room contains timber golf lockers, while the principal reception room on the first floor boasts decorative plasterwork cornices and panelled timber fireplaces.

The property is enclosed by a low saddleback-coped boundary wall that features inset arrowhead railings.
