Description
St Andrews Golf Club, located at 13 The Links in St Andrews, is a building from the 1890s that underwent alterations by W Walker and F Pride in 1921, 1927, and was converted into a golf clubhouse between 1932 and 1933. Further changes were made in 1970 and 1977, with a 3-storey addition added to the rear in 2000.
The building is three storeys tall, with an attic and basement, and features a three-bay design within an irregular terrace. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar, with a base course, moulded cill courses on the first and second floors, and an eaves cornice topped with a blocking course. The windows have architraved surrounds with bracketed cills and stone mullions. The central bay has a corniced doorway with a panelled timber door and a plate glass fanlight above. To the left, there is a canted bay on the ground and first floors, with a bipartite window on the second floor. The building also has a pair of piended timber bipartite dormer windows. The original timber framed sash and case windows featured two vertical plate glass panes in the lower sashes, with a 12-pane glazing pattern in the upper sashes on the ground and first floors, and an 8-pane pattern on the second floor. Although the glazing has been renewed, it follows the original patterns. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped ashlar stacks along with a cast-iron downpipe that has a decorative rainwater hopper. Decorative ironwork fronts all windows except for the ground left.
Inside, there is a central stairwell featuring a prominent cantilevered timber staircase with balusters and a large lantern cupola. The principal rooms have egg and dart plasterwork cornicing. The first-floor committee room includes a timber fireplace and panelling up to dado height, while the double-length billiard room has twin fireplaces.
The property is enclosed by a low saddleback-coped boundary wall with inset decorative cast-iron railings.
