Description

The Model Lodging House, located at 4 and 5 Parliament Street in Edinburgh, was designed by James Simpson and completed in 1893. This building is a four-storey structure with a raised basement and features nine bays, situated on sloping ground with a two-storey addition at the rear. It is constructed from cream sandstone with red dressings, featuring coursed and squared rubble with droved dressings on the front, and squared and snecked rubble with stugged dressings on the rear and sides. The building has a tall ashlar base course with crenellation detailing, a cornice above the ground floor, cill band courses on all floors, and an eaves band with a cornice.

On the southwest (front) elevation, the centre bay is slightly advanced and features a pediment with a tall basket-arched tripartite doorpiece, which includes moulded reveals, a panelled door, and a large plate glass fanlight above decorative timber brackets. There is an ashlar panel above the door with an inscription. The first and second floor windows are corniced in an ashlar panel, while there is a single window at the third floor. The remaining bays have single windows.

The northeast (rear) elevation includes a two-storey brick-built service wing with a piend roof in the centre. There are single windows in the remaining bays, some of which are blocked in the centre. A wallhead stack is located to the left of centre.

The northwest elevation has three bays with single windows and a central wallhead stack. The southeast elevation mirrors this design.

The ground floor features 4-pane timber sash and case windows, while the upper floors have modern replacement windows. The roof consists of a piend and platform slate design with metal flashings and three wallhead stacks. Moulded eaves gutters are also present.

The interior was not seen in 1993.
