Description

The Galloway Inn, located at 8 Kirk Street in Markinch, is an early 19th-century coaching inn that features later additions and may incorporate earlier materials. This two-storey, three-bay building is designed in an L-shape and is constructed from painted dressed ashlar and coursed rubble, with painted margins and quoin strips, and an eaves course.

The west elevation, which serves as the entrance, is symmetrical. It has a central panelled timber door with a plate glass fanlight, set within a pilastered and corniced doorcase. There are windows in the flanking bays and three regular windows positioned close to the eaves on the first floor.

To the south, there is a modern flat-roofed extension at ground level that is not included in this listing. Above this extension, the building features an M-gable with a window to the right of centre on the first floor. There is a recessed wall to the right that includes garage openings at ground level and two windows on the first floor, along with a single-storey lean-to extension in the re-entrant angle.

The north entrance displays irregular fenestration, with an M-gable that has been bridged in and a cart-bay to the left of centre that is blocked.

The east elevation is a gable end that includes a modern stair extension. The windows throughout the building mainly feature an 8-, 12-, and plate glass glazing pattern in timber sash and case windows, with top-opening timber windows to the right on the west and in the east stair extension. The roof is covered with grey slates, smaller at the apex, and pantiles. There are coped ashlar stacks with some polygonal cans to the south, coped brick to the north, and a truncated ashlar stack to the east. The ashlar coped skews are adorned with ropework scroll skewputts on the west side.
