School And Schoolhouse, Main Street, Kirkcowan

The building is a later 19th century U-plan school with an attached single storey and attic schoolhouse located on Main Street in Kirkcowan. It is constructed from squared whinstone rubble, featuring polished red sandstone rusticated quoins and dressings.

The school has a symmetrical south elevation with a four-bay center flanked by advanced gabled end bays. The center includes two bipartite windows, which are flanked by doors; the western door has been partly blocked and converted into a window. The outer bays also feature bipartite windows, all of which are three-light sash windows. At the rear, there are single storey rendered extensions.

The schoolhouse is a three plus one bay cottage that adjoins the school on the east side. The right bay has a tall bipartite window with a gablet head. There is a central door with a timber gablet porch, leading to a panelled door with a three-pane fanlight. Flanking the door are bipartite windows, which are sash and case with plate glass glazing. In the attic, there are three timber gabled dormers, each with timber bipartite windows featuring small pane glazing. Both the school and schoolhouse have well-maintained graded slate roofs with deep overhanging timber bracketed eaves, coped ends, and axial stacks with tall square cans. The school and schoolhouse also feature louvred vents and decorative downpipes. A rubble boundary wall surrounds the schoolyard and schoolhouse, which is cement pointed along the roadside.
