Description

The building is a primary school and adjoining schoolhouse located on High Street in Port William, dating from after 1872 and featuring modern alterations and additions. It consists of a two-storey L-plan house and a tall single-storey school attached to the east. The structure is built from squared and snecked whinstone masonry, with red sandstone ashlar dressings that include chamfered margins, quoins, and eaves and base courses. All openings are segmental-arched.

On the north elevation facing High Street, the house is positioned to the right. It has an advanced gable to the left, topped with an ashlar apex finial. There are bipartite windows on both floors and a small square panel in the gablehead facing north. The west return features a ground floor window and a window with a gabled dormer head on the first floor. There is a square-plan full-height porch with a swept pyramidal roof in the re-entrant angle to the right, which has a hoodmoulded door with a plate glass fanlight facing north and a small bipartite window above on the first floor. The school is to the left, featuring a gabled porch at the center with an ashlar apex finial. It has a door with a blinded fanlight and decorative iron hinges on the east return, along with a hoodmoulded bipartite window and a small square panel in the gablehead facing north. There are two bipartite windows to the left. A modern low flat-roofed addition is located to the right, between the porch and the advanced gable of the house, with modern windows inserted in the elevation above, one of which breaks the eaves.

The west elevation has a bipartite window at ground floor and another window on the first floor. The east elevation features a gable to the right with a tall transomed tripartite window and a circular panel in the gablehead. A modern addition is attached to the left of the gable. The house has plate glass glazing in its sash and case windows, while the school features modern glazing with a small-pane pattern, and the porch window has 8-pane sash and case glazing. The roof is covered with slightly graded large grey slates, and there are red sandstone coped skews and moulded skewends. The building has red sandstone ashlar coped stacks, with one ridge between the school and the house and a gablehead stack on the house. There is red sandstone block detail at the apex of the east gable, cast-iron rainwater goods, two axial ventilators, and several octagonal cans.

The boundary and garden walls consist of rubble coped rubble walls, with a low wall topped by modern railings surrounding the playground to the north.
