Description

This is a former school and adjoining schoolhouse, built after 1872. The building comprises a single-storey school attached to the south, slightly lower in level and forming an L-shaped plan, and a two-storey schoolhouse adjoining it. The construction uses lightly painted rubble with red sandstone ashlar dressings, stugged rybats, and quoins, featuring droved margin drafts with chamfered margins stopped before the cill. Later brick additions are also present.

The east elevation shows the school to the left, with a gable projecting to the left, containing a bipartite window and a blind gun loop in the gablehead. A lean-to porch sits in the re-entrant angle to the north return, featuring a boarded door facing east and a small window to the north. A window is located to the right of the porch. The schoolhouse is to the right of the east elevation, arranged with three bays. A gabled porch is centrally positioned, with a partly-glazed panelled door facing south and a window facing east. The fenestration is regularly disposed in the outer bays, with a bipartite window at ground floor in the bay to the right; gabled dormerheads are above the first-floor windows. A window is present on the north elevation at the first floor.

The south elevation features a gable slightly advanced to the left, with a bipartite window. Painted brick outhouses have been adjoined at the centre. The west elevation shows the schoolhouse to the left, with a gable projecting to the right, incorporating a first-floor window to the left and a smaller ground-floor window to the left. A window is present on the north return. A half-piended single-storey wing extends from the gable at ground floor to the right, with a door to the left, a central window, and a window that was formerly a door, reduced to a window facing north, and another formerly a door, reduced to a window to the west. A painted brick lean-to is attached to the south and in the re-entrant angle to the right. A stair window flanks the gable to the left. The school section of the west elevation has two windows, and a basement door is located to the right.

Most windows are sash and case with 12 panes, with 8-pane glazing to bipartite windows and the porch window of the schoolhouse. Ashlar coped skews are present, separating the school and house. The building has ashlar-dressed coped stacks with gables to the north, south, and west of the schoolhouse, and a ridge stack to the east jamb of the school. Small grey slates cover the schoolhouse roof, while purple slates cover the school roof. Gabled ventilators are situated on the east and west pitches of the school roof, topped with octagonal cans.

Rubble walls enclose the property. Ashlar gatepiers, chamfered and pyramidal-capped, mark the east wall; a pair are associated with the schoolhouse and have a plain iron gate, while another pair are at the school, with the north pier altered in brick. A telephone kiosk (listed separately) is located at the gateway to the school.
