Description

The Craighlaw Arms is an inn dating to around 1800, prominently situated on Main Street in Kirkcowan. It is a two-storey building with three bays plus a single bay to the left, incorporating a depressed-arch pend. The exterior is of painted rubble construction, with painted raised angle details and window margins. The central doorway is recessed and features a fanlight above the door. The ground floor windows are sash and case, with single panes of plate glass. First floor windows are also sash and case, with a three-pane pattern. To the left of the main façade, a basket-arched pend provides access at ground level, with a blind bay positioned above. The building has an eaves cornice and a blocking course, topped with good-quality graded slate roofs. The end stacks are coped with thackstanes, and a sandstone ridge and skew are visible on the right side. A two-storey painted rubble wing extends to the rear, situated to the left.
