Description

The Church of Scotland parish church at Kirkcowan was built in 1834 as a Neo-gothic T-plan church. A squat tower is set into the north side of the T-shaped layout. External gallery steps, curving to the east and west, lead up to porches at the east and west gables. The exterior walls are largely rendered over rubble, with polished sandstone used for the margins, dressings, and buttresses.

The south elevation has two smaller and two taller windows. Two-light pointed-arch windows with perpendicular tracery flank a central buttressed bay, which now has a small, pedimented window; this bay was likely originally the location of a "pulpit door". The east and west gables feature a two-storey gabled porch providing access to both the ground floor and gallery levels. An external, curved flight of steps leads to the gallery level, with a simple cast-iron handrail. Two small traceried windows are positioned on either side of the gallery porch. The north jamb has a single bay with windows of similar design. The north tower is a three-stage, square-plan structure with buttresses. It has doors on the east and west sides, tall traceried lights on the second stage, and a blocked belfry on the third stage.

The tower has an embattled parapet with pinnacles at the corners. Doorways are simply detailed with chamfered, square heads. The windows are pointed-arch; the taller windows have stone tracery, while the smaller windows have painted timber tracery, all with small-pane, diamond glazing. An eaves cornice and blocking course are present, with end skews featuring decorative cross finials at the apex. The roof is slate-covered.

Inside, galleries are supported by cast-iron columns. A central pulpit is situated on a raised dais with a tester. An organ is located to the left of the pulpit. A good plaster ceiling rose is also present.

The building remains in ecclesiastical use and includes boundary walls.
