Description

Drochduil Schoolhouse, built in 1875, consists of a two-storey house and an adjoining single-storey school. The building is constructed from whinstone rubble, squared and snecked on the south elevation, with sandstone angle margins and chamfered margins, including some quoins. The east, west, and north elevations feature brick quoins and margins, along with sandstone lintels and cills. The eaves are overhanging.

On the principal south elevation, there are four bays, with the school occupying three bays on the left. The outer left and right bays are jerkin-headed and advanced. Lean-to porches are located in the re-entrant angles of the advanced gables, with doors facing south and windows on the inner returns. A tall bipartite window is found in the outer left bay, while the centre bays also contain bipartite windows. The outer right bay features a bipartite window at ground floor and another window at the first floor.

The west elevation has a two-light window at both the ground and first floors on the left. The central gabled bay is advanced and includes a fanlit door on the south return, with windows on both floors facing east. To the right, a jerkin-headed bay is slightly recessed from the centre bay and has a two-light window at the ground floor and a window at the first floor.

On the north elevation, there is a jerkin-headed bay to the right of centre, which has a modern extension attached. This elevation also features a two-light window to the right and another at the centre. To the left of centre, there is a brick outbuilding with a window above at the first floor, a door to the left, and a small window flanking it. The extension is designed in a compatible style, with overhanging eaves and a graded slate roof, featuring a jerkin-head to the north and small-pane sash and case windows.

The house primarily has four-pane glazing, while the school has modern timber-framed glazing with eight-pane lights. Decorative cast-iron finials adorn the jerkin-headed roofs on the left and south sides, and there is a gablehead stack on the jerkin-headed bay to the right and a wallhead stack on the left side facing north. The roofs are covered with grey slates, graded to deeper pitches, and some slates have been replaced. The original rainwater goods remain in place. The interior of the school has been modernised.
