Description

The Old Schoolhouse, located at 25 Cramond Glebe Road in Cramond, Edinburgh, was built in 1778 by James Robb. This former schoolhouse is a two-storey, four-bay building designed in a plain classical style and features an L-plan layout with single-storey additions at the rear, which now serve as the front entrance. It was converted into a residential property in the late 19th century. The building has a gabled façade facing the street, with a piended wing that projects at a right angle to the front. The exterior is finished in whitewashed harl, with painted surrounds around the openings. A continuous eaves course runs along the rear, which originally marked the schoolmaster's private entrance. The single-storey scullery, earth closet, and fuel store at the front, which were originally the pupils' entrance, have been converted into a single garage.

On the north (entrance) elevation, there is a boarded timber door located in the outer left of a three-bay, single-storey addition to the right of the projecting wing. The remaining bays to the right feature single windows, with the garage occupying the outer right bay and a single window above the entrance on the first floor. The piended wing has a regular arrangement of windows in both the ground and first floors.

The south (rear) elevation includes a two-leaf part-glazed timber door in the penultimate bay to the outer left, along with an original rectangular fanlight that has a geometric glazing pattern. The remaining bays are regularly fenestrated on both the ground and first floors.

The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows on both elevations, with 4-pane sash and case windows in the single-storey addition at the front. The roof is covered with graded grey slate and has harled apex stacks on the east and west sides, along with projecting stone cornices and octagonal cans.

The boundary wall consists of a random rubble sandstone construction with rounded coping and droved gatepiers facing Cramond Glebe Road.
