Description
This building, located at 1 and 2 Warrender Park Crescent and 10 and 11 Alvanley Terrace in Edinburgh, dates from around 1880 and is a four-storey corner tenement with a basement on the north side. It features Jacobean architectural details and includes shops on the ground floor. The exterior is constructed from coursed lightly stugged grey ashlar with polished dressings. Key architectural elements include a base course, a decorative carved cornice above the shops, a string course at the third floor, raised window surrounds, chamfered reveals, and pedimented dormer heads for the third-floor windows.
The elevation on Warrender Park Crescent has nine bays, including an angle bay. It features round-arched doorways with recessed polished granite columns flanking the second bay and offset to the left in the fifth bay, leading to two-leaf panelled doors and plate glass fanlights. There are single windows above in the second bay, and a round-arched window detailed like a doorway is offset to the right in the fifth bay, with single windows above. The first bay has a full-height canted window topped with a facetted pyramidal roof and an iron finial. The fourth bay contains a full-height bipartite window, while the third bay has a round-arched window detailed as a doorway at ground level, with single windows above.
The sixth, seventh, and eighth bays feature an advanced four-light canted shopfront with a blocking course at ground level, with single windows above. The third-floor windows are corbelled out and linked by a gable in the fifth and sixth bays. A roll-moulded round-arched doorway with polished granite columns is set to the left and right in the angle bay, with full-height bipartite windows above. The second-floor window has round-arched panels, and the third-floor window is corbelled out and set in a segmental-arched panel. Ball finials adorn the skews and kneelers of the gable, and there is a blank heraldic panel set in the gable head, along with a "WDMG" heraldic panel at the second floor between the fourth and fifth bays.
The elevation on Alvanley Terrace has five bays, with two shopfronts at ground level. There is a full-height bipartite window in the third bay and single windows in the remaining bays, featuring plate glass sash and case windows. The roof is grey slate, with corbelled and corniced wallhead stacks located between the second and third bays and between the seventh and eighth bays on the north side, as well as a corniced wallhead stack on the west side. The building also has coped mutual stacks, gabletted skewputts, and stone finials.
The interiors were not seen in 1991. Additionally, there are cast-iron boundary railings along the street (Warrender Park Crescent) and the area.
