Description
153-163 Warrender Park Road is a four-storey corner tenement block designed by Thomas Gibson around 1880, featuring Jacobean details and shops on the ground floor. The building is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. It includes a base course, a string cill course at the second floor, a string course at the third floor, raised and lugged window surrounds, and third-floor windows that break the eaves in stone-finialled predimented dormerheads. The reveals are chamfered, and there are panelled doors.
The southern elevation on Warrender Park Road has four bays and a polygonal angle tower on the outer left. The ground floor features alternating shop windows and doorways. There is a full-height, four-light canted window in the outer right bay, with a steep pediment over the central lights of the third-floor window, topped with a facetted pyramidal roof and an iron finial. The remaining bays have single windows, and there is a pediment linked to a wallhead stack with arcaded moulding over the second and third bays. A blinded pilastered and depressed-arch panel is located between the angle and the first bay, with a bracketted and corbelled wallhead stack above. The polygonal angle tower has a four-light design with ball-finialled barleysugar colonnettes between the lights, although two ball finials are missing. Each light at the third floor has a ball-finialled pediment, and the tower is topped with a tall facetted pyramidal roof, which is missing its brattishing.
The western elevation on Alvanley Terrace has two bays with the angle tower on the outer right. There is a doorway in the second bay and a single window above it, while the first bay has single windows. The windows are plate glass sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are corniced wallhead stacks. The interiors were not seen in 1991, and there is a low saddleback wall to Alvanley Terrace.
