Description

A single-storey, rubble-built vernacular house, likely dating from the mid-19th century, stands on the east side of Moyad Road, approximately 8 kilometres west of Newcastle, County Down. A gabled porch is situated to the right of centre. The western front is asymmetrical, featuring a large gabled porch with a window opening to the gable and a doorway facing south. Windows are present on either side of the porch, although window frames are missing and the doorway lacks a door. The south gable is blank, while the north gable has a rubble-built shed with a corrugated iron roof attached. The roof is finished with natural slate, and the walls are constructed of random rubble. The rear facade was not visible during inspection.

Adjacent to the main house, within a field to the south, is a small, gabled, one-roomed former cottier’s dwelling. The north front has a timber sheeted door on the right side and a boarded-up window opening to the left. Traces of an abutting building are visible on the west gable. The roof is finished with natural slate, the walls are built of random rubble laid to courses, and the corners feature rough quoins.

An Ordnance Survey map from 1859 shows a building on the site of the larger house, closely resembling its current form. However, the cottier’s dwelling is not depicted on this map. In 1863, a Mark Maginn was recorded as the occupant of the larger house, which was valued at below £1. The building is currently used as shelter for farm animals. The property is in private ownership and is noted as being derelict.
