Description

This is a two-storey, gabled vernacular farmhouse likely dating to the mid-19th century, situated near Newcastle, County Down. The house is positioned at a right angle to the west of the Bog Road, approximately five miles west of Newcastle.

The front facade, facing roughly north, is asymmetrical. A small, timber-sheeted lean-to porch with a slate roof sits to the left of centre, containing a timber door. To either side of the porch are small sash windows, with a smaller window directly above on the first floor. The east gable rises slightly above the adjoining large barn, which features a central timber-sheeted door and a smaller access door to the right. A lean-to shed is built against the west gable. The southern facade has a single small ground floor window on the right side. Rendered chimney stacks are present on both gables. The roof is covered in Bangor Blue slate, with much of the guttering now missing. The front of the house is smooth render, while the remainder is constructed from random rubble, as are the adjoining outbuildings. A small sloping farmyard is situated in front of the house, and a small concrete yard to the rear may have previously been used as a pigsty.

A building is depicted on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834. Records from 1863 identify John McAvoy as the occupant, with the house having a rateable value of £1 (below the rateable threshold). It’s possible the building initially began as a single-story structure with the roof raised later. The outbuildings include a barn merging with the east side and a lean-to byre merging to the west side. The building is currently in private ownership and is recorded as having been derelict at some point.
