Description
Six Slievenaman Road is a two-storey gabled vernacular house of possible mid-19th-century date, with attached outbuildings. It stands to the east of Slievenaman Road, four miles west of Newcastle, on a slope running roughly west to east.
The north front of the main house is asymmetrical. A small flat-roofed porch with timber-sheeted door is positioned right of centre. To the left is a window opening (now boarded) with smooth cement surround, above which is a shorter opening containing a two-pane-over-two-pane sash window. To the right of the door are similar windows on both ground and first floors; the ground floor window is also blocked. The facade is finished in pebble dash, with decorative black and white pebble patterns on the piers flanking the porch.
To the right (west), the main house facade merges with a larger outbuilding whose roof sits level with the house but, due to rising ground level, appears single-storey. This outbuilding has two centrally placed timber-sheeted door openings on its north front, the right one set slightly higher. Further right is a smaller additional outbuilding, also with two timber-sheeted doors positioned left of centre. The west gable of the larger outbuilding rises above its smaller neighbour and is blank, as is the gable of the smaller outbuilding. The east gable contains a two-pane-over-two-pane sash window to the first floor with cement dressings, and below it a small corrugated iron shed with a ground-floor opening.
The south face features a large single-storey return to the left of centre. The wall to the left of this return and the south face of the small outbuilding are blank. The return has a timber-sheeted door on its west face, a six-pane steel window on its south face, and another six-pane steel window on its east face. The rear facade of the main house has two ground-floor windows with frames matching the front.
Roof finishes vary: the main house and larger outbuilding are covered in natural slate; the large return appears to be finished in asbestos slate; the small outbuilding is finished in corrugated iron. The remainder of the walls are plain rendered.
Historic records show a house on this site appearing on both the 1834 and 1859 Ordnance Survey maps. The present two-storey form may result from raising of the roof in the late 19th or early 20th century. A Patrick McClean is recorded as occupant in the 1863 valuation returns.
