Description
A two-storey gabled vernacular house of mid-19th-century construction, set at the end of a lane to the east of Trassey Road, approximately 4 miles west of Newcastle. The building was substantially renovated in the 1990s, when a new two-storey return was built to the rear, replacing an earlier extension from the 1950s or 1960s.
The main house presents an asymmetrical north-facing front façade. A small lean-to porch with timber-sheeted door sits at the far left of the ground floor. To the right of the porch are three small sash windows with vertical glazing bars (2 panes over 2). The first floor mirrors this arrangement with four similar sash windows aligned above the ground-floor openings. The east gable contains a small sash window to the left on the first floor, while the west gable is blank.
The rear of the main house is largely obscured by the new gabled return. This return is a full-height structure with corresponding windows on both east and west faces. On the east face of the return, a single-storey lean-to abuts both the return and the main house, fitted with a timber-sheeted stable door and sash window. Above this, the main return has a sash window to ground level, with a very small sash window (3 panes over 3) at first-floor level. The west face of the return is symmetrically arranged with windows to both floors. The visible portion of the main house's rear façade has windows to ground and first floors. Adjacent to the return gable is a long single-storey outbuilding with rubble-stone façade, natural slate gabled roof, and a row of small four-pane windows to both east and west elevations. Timber-sheeted doors are set into the east face.
The main house façade is finished in uneven, unpainted render with an eaves course. The roof is covered in natural slate with rendered parapets. Four rendered chimney stacks rise from the main house: three at the gables and one at the centre of the roof ridge. A cast-iron skylight is positioned to the rear. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present throughout.
Historical records indicate that while buildings occupied this general site as early as 1834, the present house first appears on the revised Ordnance Survey map of 1859. The second (Griffith's) valuation returns of 1863 record the property in the ownership of John McAllister with a rateable value of £2-15-0. The house remained with the McAllister family until 1919, when it was sold to the Devlin family. After a period of dereliction, the Devlins sold it in 1987 to the present owner. According to the current owner, the front doorway formerly stood slightly further to the right, where a window now occupies the space immediately right of the present entrance. The two-storey return is a more recent addition dating to approximately 1997, replacing an extension built in the 1950s or 1960s.
