Description

This is a long, single-story, gabled vernacular dwelling of probable pre-1834 origin, situated in a hollow to the south of Hilltown Road, approximately a mile west of Bryansford village. The house is built on a slope running north to south, with its front façade facing east and displaying an asymmetrical design.

The front façade features a timber-sheeted door positioned to the left of centre, accompanied by a window to its left and two to its right, all within sash frames with vertical glazing bars (two panes over two). A small gabled shed with a doorway and a small window opening towards the east is attached to the south gable. The north gable is blank. At the rear, there are two windows with modern frames, one to the left and one centrally placed. A lean-to structure is situated to the right, and was largely obscured from view. The exterior is harled, with two of the front windows exhibiting crudely fashioned surrounds. The roof is covered in natural slate, and a small cast iron skylight is present on the front. Three rendered chimney stacks are visible, and cast iron rainwater goods are in place. Several small outbuildings are situated to the north and west of the house. A wrought iron gate, supported by round gate pillars, marks the end of the driveway to the north.

A building is depicted on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1859 on this site, likely corresponding to the current structure. In 1863, a Patrick McAnalan was recorded as the tenant, with the property rated at 10 shillings, which was below its actual rateable value. The building appears on Ordnance Survey maps dated 1834 and 1859 (sheet 49), and is documented in the 1863 Griffith's Valuation records for Kilcoo.
