Description
The Tollymore Mountain Centre is a single and two-storey timber building, designed to resemble a log cabin chalet and constructed in 1970 to designs by the James Munce Partnership. The building stands on the edge of Tollymore Forest Park, just south of the Hilltown Road, approximately 3 miles west of Newcastle and 1 mile west of Bryansford.
The centre is roughly L-shaped, comprising a large, two-storey gabled section to the west and a longer, single-storey gabled wing to the east. These are connected by a small flat-roofed central portion, which is partially obscured to the north by a large gabled entrance porch, possibly a later addition. The building has varied window and door openings, not all of which are original, enclosed within timber frames. The roof is covered in asbestos ‘slates’ with Velux windows to the single-storey section. The two-storey section originally featured a jettied façade, though subsequent alterations have reduced its visual prominence. The exterior is primarily timber, with some sections retaining the original log facing while others, particularly the gables of the two-storey section, have been refaced with neatly planed timber, diminishing the original log cabin aesthetic. A new steel-framed structure is currently under construction to the southeast side of the building. Trees from the surrounding forest were incorporated into the original construction. The building has undergone minor alterations since its construction including added openings and portions of the façade being refaced.
