Description
This is a small, one-and-a-half-storey, gabled vernacular cottage likely built between 1820 and 1839. It is situated at the end of a farm track near the summit of Clonachullion Hill, approximately four miles west of Newcastle, County Down. The cottage is positioned to the south of Trassey Road.
The western front is divided into two sections and is asymmetrical. A small lean-to porch is located to the left of centre. To the left of the porch is a small two-over-two sash window, and to the right is a similar window that is slightly smaller and set higher, reflecting a slight slope in the ground. A lower-ridged section is situated to the right, potentially originally an outhouse but now incorporated into the dwelling, with a matching sash window. The north gable features a small sash window without astragals near the gable apex. The south gable, which is single-storey, has a timber-sheeted door. The eastern facade has a modern two-pane window to the far left (within the lower section), and a similar window to the left of the taller section. Above this is a recently inserted half dormer window with a glazed gable, sitting on another two-pane modern window, with a similar half dormer on the right side. The external walls are harled with a black painted base course. The roof is covered in natural slate, and each gable has a parapet. The rainwater goods are metal.
The cottage is set within a garden that was formerly a small farmyard. There are four recently constructed traditional circular gate pillars with wrought iron gates. Single-storey outbuildings are located to the south.
A building is depicted on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1859, likely corresponding to the present cottage. Griffith's valuation records from 1863 list the occupant as Mary McClean, with the house valued at 15 shillings (below rateable value). The property appears to have been renovated in the late 1980s or 1990s, when the rear dormers were added.
