Description
Substantial two storey gabled house, with completely modern appearance, built around a vernacular dwelling of possible 1860s origin, but now bearing no resemblance to its former self. This property is set on the NW side of the Bog Road, 5 miles W of Newcastle and 1 mile SE of the small village of Kilcoo. The front NE façade has a modern timber and glazed porch, with a large modern window to either side to the ground floor and two similar to the first floor. Both the NW and SE gables have an uneven pitch and are blank. To the rear there is a large two storey lean-to projection with modern windows and door. The entire façade is finished in plain cement render. The roof is covered in artificial slate and the rw goods are PVC. Two rendered chimney pots. To all intents and purposes this house is modern, with only the thickness of a section of the ground floor walls betraying something of the building’s origins. The original house was a low, two storey vernacular dwelling with a harled façade, small lean-to porch, tiny window openings and an even pitched gabled roof. The present, however, is considerably taller, has completely modern openings and a large projection to rear. All that appears to remain of the previous dwelling is some of the material contained within the ground floor walls to the front, which, as stated above, are considerably thicker than those above and to the rear.
