Description

This is a small, typical vernacular house located on the south side of Bog Road in Rathfriland, County Down. The house dates from the early 19th century, likely around 1800 to 1819, and is shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834 with a valuation indicating it was worth less than £5. There were no changes in its valuation between the 1860s and the 1920s.

The building is a single storey, three-bay structure, with the right two bays forming the dwelling and the left bay serving as an outbuilding. It has a pitched roof covered in natural slate, which is now in poor repair, except for the outbuilding. The walls are lime rendered over rubble stone, with exposed foundation stones visible at the left end. A stone eaves course runs along the left bay of both the house and the outbuilding, while the right bay of the house has brick eaves. Two rendered and coped chimneys are positioned, one at each end of the house.

The principal elevation faces north. The outbuilding's left bay has a tongue and groove sheeted door. The house's left bay has a projecting granite rubble porch with a catslide natural slate roof, and a 6/6 sliding sash window with horns and a roughly dressed granite cill. The right bay has a 2/2 sliding sash window with horns and a finely dressed granite cill. The left gable of the house is abutted by a lower concrete block outbuilding, while the remaining part of the gable is blank. The rear elevations of both the house and outbuilding are blank. The right gable is abutted by a small, unremarkable concrete block lean-to and the remainder is blank. The building is currently in use as a house and was noted as derelict during its record.
