5 Greenhill Road, Rathfriland, Newry, Co Down, BT34 5AS

This is a small, vernacular house dating probably to the early 19th century, located on Greenhill Road in Rathfriland, County Down. The house is aligned perpendicular to the west side of the road, with its gable facing the street. It has a pitched roof covered in natural slate, with concrete skews and three rendered and coped chimney stacks – one on each gable and a third between the middle and right bays. An advanced eaves course supports metal rainwater goods. The walls are line-rendered and painted. The principal, north-facing elevation features an advanced porch in the central bay, alongside a single window to its right. The porch has a pitched natural slate roof and plain bargeboards, with blank cheeks, and a four-panelled, bolection-moulded entrance door with painted cast iron furniture. A single window is located in the left bay, and two windows in the right bay. All windows are vertically divided sliding sash windows with horns and painted concrete cills. The gable ends are blank; the right gable abuts a lower, derelict outbuilding with a corrugated metal roof, which is not of interest. A lean-to extension, constructed of rendered concrete blockwork with a corrugated metal roof, adjoins the centre and left bays of the rear elevation. A single three-paned steel casement window is found in the right bay. The front garden is enclosed by a rendered and coped wall with a pair of 20th-century wrought iron gates. The house was vacated in 1990. The property was shown on the 1833 Ordnance Survey map and exhibited no changes in valuation records between the 1860s and 1920s.
