Description

This cast iron bell tower is an unusual, free-standing structure located immediately east of St Colman’s Roman Catholic Church and adjacent to the parochial house in Rathfriland. The tower was erected in 1932, though the bronze bell itself dates to 1912. It rests on a two-stage concrete plinth and is supported by four tall cast iron columns. These columns feature fluted dados with a moulded and foliated frieze, and similar foliated bands beneath their plain capitals. The columns are marked with the maker’s name, “M. Byrne. Dublin”. The open iron base is supported by decorative brackets and incorporates a hand-operated bell. The bell carriage is inscribed “M. Byrne Patent Rotary Mountings”, and a slender spoked pulley is affixed to one end of the mounting, from which the operating chain hangs. The bronze bell is inscribed "Ave Maria," and bears dates referencing “Rev T. Gallery PP, 1912,” “J.O’Byrne Foundry, James Street Dublin.” The tower survives unaltered and is in working order. The parish priest believes the structure was erected to commemorate the Dublin Eucharistic Congress.
