Description

The belltower at St Dympna’s Roman Catholic Church is a free-standing, three-stage belfry constructed around 1915. It is located to the south side of St Dympna’s Road in Dromore. The building is part of a group, though not contemporary, with the adjacent St. Dympna’s RC church and former primary school.

The walls are roughcast rendered, featuring stepped quoins and a projecting string course that separates the stages. The north elevation’s first stage contains a single, square-headed replacement door set within a ruled-and-lined rendered recess with smooth banding. The east, west, and south elevations are blank. The second stage’s south elevation has a square-headed narrow window opening (no window remains), while the east, north, and west elevations are blank. The third belfry stage is supported by square corner pillars, each divided by a diminishing central pillar. The original cast metal bell and wheel remain beneath a timber sheeted soffit. The third stage is crowned by an octagonal natural slate cupola topped with a cast-metal cross finial. Pediments are positioned at the corners of the belfry stage.

The belltower occupies an elevated position to the south of the church. Mature hedging encloses the building to the south and east, and a tarmac path through the adjacent graveyard provides access from the north. The roof is covered in natural slate, and the walls are roughcast rendered with stepped quoins. The openings are square-headed; no windows remain within them.

The belltower first appears on the 1938 Ordnance Survey map within the grounds of St Dympna’s RC Church, and its presence is linked to an increase in the value of the associated land in 1912. The tower’s construction date aligns with that of the church’s porch and sacristy, which are dated 1917.
