90 Newry Road, Rathfriland, Newry, Co Down, BT34 5AB

This is a two-storey, two-bay house located on the south side of the junction between Newry Road and Greenhill Road in Rathfriland. Dating to around 1897, it first appears in the valuation revision book as a house and shop.

The building is externally characterised by a pitched natural slate roof with concrete skews and terracotta ridge tiles. It has rendered and coped chimneys to each gable, and the rainwater goods are missing. The walls are lined cement rendered and painted, featuring painted stepped quoins and an advanced rendered eaves course. The principal, northeast-facing elevation has a timber-clad door on the right of the left bay, and a single window opening with an exposed sash box and granite cill to the left, which has been sheeted over. Matching boarded-over window openings are above. The right bay features a projecting entrance porch with a monopitched natural slate roof and a timber-clad door. The porch cheeks are blank. To the right of the porch is an infilled window opening, with a corresponding opening above it on the first floor. The left and right gables are unpainted and lined cement rendered, and both are blank. The rear elevation has wet dashed walls, and is abutted to the left and centre bays by a single-storey outbuilding with a half-hipped natural slate roof. A modern timber-clad door sits to the ground floor right of the outbuilding, while two blocked window openings are on the first floor to the left. Buildings are marked on the 1834 Ordnance Survey six-inch map in this area, but the current building’s date of construction is confirmed as 1897.
