27 Ballykeel Road, Rathfriland, Newry, Co Down, BT34 5AZ

This is a one-and-a-half-story, two-bay direct-entry vernacular house with a single-bay outbuilding attached to the left gable. The building, likely dating from the early 19th century (1800-1819), is situated up a lane off Ballykeel Road, near a similar vernacular house. It’s marked on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834 and was originally valued below £5, with no change in valuation recorded between the 1860s and the 1920s.

The house is oriented with its principal elevation facing southeast. The front features a narrow, rendered brick entrance porch with a natural slate roof that slopes down from the main roofline, and a T&G sheeted door with an original black cast iron letterbox. To the left of the porch is an exposed, three-by-three sliding sash window with horns. The right bay contains a similar window, now covered with sheeting. The left gable is directly adjacent to a single-story outbuilding with a slightly steeper roof pitch and rendered brick eaves. On the left end of the facade is a large doorway, the lintel of which has collapsed. The gable above this doorway is blank. A roof slate pot is present on the left gable chimney. A metal skylight is positioned on the front pitch of the left bay. Rainwater goods are absent. The walls are lime rendered over rubble granite, with a rendered advanced granite eaves course. The rear elevation has a single window opening to the right bay of the house and one to the outbuilding.

The building was formerly used as, and remains, a house. It was recorded as derelict in the past.
