Description

This is a part single and part two-storey house dating to the 1850s, likely built upon the foundations of a smaller, single-storey dwelling that existed before 1834. Located on the side of Bryansford Road, near Fofannyreagh, approximately 7 kilometres east of Hilltown, the house originally served as the residence of a steward for the Roden Estate.

The asymmetrical front (north) elevation features a long, single-storey section to the east with a central timber door, a plain fanlight above, and sash windows with vertical astragals (2 over 2) on either side. To the west is a two-storey section with its gable facing forward, projecting beyond the original low-rise portion. This section has sash windows on each floor, each with six panes in the upper sash and two in the lower. The upper window is slightly smaller. A tall, broad brick chimney stack with three pots is located where the single and two-storey sections meet. The rear façade has two large ground-floor windows, with a modern frame on the right-hand window. The east gable of the single-storey section features a small, high-level opening and a small chimney stack at the gable apex. The projecting front gable of the two-storey section is finished with squared granite blocks and snecks, while the remainder of the building is roughcast. The roof is covered in natural slate, with a small rendered chimney stack on the east gable.

Historical records indicate a building existed on the site on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1859. A valuation from around 1835 shows the property as a single-storey dwelling occupied by William McCracken, the Roden Estate's ‘Bog Bailiff.’ McCracken, or his son of the same name, was still residing there in 1863 when a second valuation was conducted. At that time, Lord Roden had remodelled the house, bringing it to its current appearance, as shown on the 1859 Ordnance Survey map. The property was occupied until the 1960s. A large, two-storey rubble-built outbuilding is located to the east, and a more recent dwelling (built around the 1960s) sits further east. The building is currently recorded as derelict.
