Description

This is a milepost located on the roadside at the National Grid Reference ST 6297 4085. It dates from the early 19th century and is made of cast iron. The milepost has a V-shaped design with a canted top and features the inscriptions: "BRUTON 5. SHEPTON MALLET 2. CASTLE CARY 6." It is part of the former Shepton Mallet Turnpike Trust, as noted in Bryan Morland's book on the infrastructure of the Industrial Revolution in Somerset from 1985.
