Description

Nos. 85 and 87 are a pair of houses located on North Street, dating from the later 17th century. They are constructed from Ham stone ashlar and feature a double Roman clay tile roof supported by brick chimney stacks. The houses are two storeys high and consist of three bays in total.

No. 85, which is a single bay, has ovolo mould mullioned windows with three lights and horizontal bar infills, along with a label below. It also has a boarded door with a light set in the opening to the left. No. 87 occupies two bays and features hollow chamfer mullioned windows, with the lower windows having plain casements inserted. The lower bay 1 has a cambered arched doorway with incised spandrils, set under a deep lintel with a square label.

Although the interiors have not been seen, there is a plain wrought iron railing with arrowhead points and quarter-circle braces located two metres west of the houses. There are no gates, but at each end, the railing is connected to coped stone walls that return to the houses, enhancing the setting of the houses and the overall streetscape.
