Description

Martock Methodist Church is a Methodist church built between 1868 and 1886. It is constructed from ham stone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof that is grey banded with purple, complete with ornamental clay tile ridges and ridge stops. The church has overhung gables, with a coped gable at the front. The roadside elevation consists of a three-bay gable, with the central bay being larger and the outer bays featuring gables on the returns.

In the first bay, there are a pair of trefoil cusped lancet windows. The second bay contains a four-light window with sub-arcuated design, quatrefoil and circle tracery, and foliated caps on the jamb shafts, all beneath an arched label. This bay also has three small lancets as vents at the gable crown, which is topped with an ornamental finial. The third bay features a pair of doors set in a pointed arched doorway with a quatrefoil fanlight above.

Between the first and second bays is a slim square tower that transitions to an octagonal shape at the roof level, crowned with a steeple. The tower includes gargoyles at the corners and slim lancets for minor fires. The side elevations have six bays, with a schoolroom at the rear that is not of special interest. The initial Wesleyan Chapel was built in 1868, with a Sunday school added in 1869, a new schoolroom in 1876, and the church being rebuilt in 1886.
