Description
No. 49, North Street, is a detached house, likely dating from the early 19th century, although it may incorporate earlier fabric. It is constructed of ham stone ashlar with a hipped Welsh slate roof and brick chimney stacks. The front elevation has two storeys and three bays, with a plinth and band course. It features 16-pane sash windows in plain openings. A 6-panel, part-glazed door is recessed and has a beaded surround in the lower bay to the left.
The south elevation has two bays. The upper bay 1 has a 16-pane sash window, while both levels of bay 2 feature a 3-light mullioned window with beaded architraves. A single-storey extension is built against the north gable, with a double Roman clay tile roof. To the left of the extension are a pair of boarded gates under a timber lintel, and to the right, an early pattern boarded door in a cambered arched doorway with a wave mould surround under a deep lintel. A further, lower extension is located to the rear, topped with a stepped coped gable and a weathervane.
An extension is also present to the rear. The interior of the house has not been inspected. Approximately four metres to the west of the house are railings with arrowhead points and pyramid caps to the gate piers. A return boundary wall in stone rubble with plain coping follows Steppes Crescent, all contributing to the house's setting and to the street scene.
