Description

Nos. 9 and 11 Hurst are a pair of houses at the end of a row, originally built as a single dwelling, dated 1699. They are constructed from ham stone ashlar with a double Roman clay tiled roof, the south gable showing tall coping suggesting a former thatched finish, and brick chimney stacks. The houses are two storeys and three bays wide. The upper bays feature hollow-chamfered mullioned windows of three lights. The lower bay has a four-light mullioned window with a label. Bay 2 is a two-storey angled bay window with one, four, and one lights, labels at both levels, and a gable set on shared kneeler stones. The lower bay 3 contains a cambered arched doorway with a 19th-century part-glazed door and a label above a deep lintol, carved with "WA 1699". A single-storey lean-to is attached to the south gable, with an early 20th-century door and a two-light mullioned window with a label, likely a re-use of materials; a similar window is blocked in the gable above. The interior was not inspected. Approximately 3 metres east of the houses is a low stone wall featuring simple arrowhead railings, cast urn finials on braced standards, and later wooden gates opposite the doors, extending to the house north of No. 9. This wall contributes to the setting of the houses and the street scene.
