Description

No. 3 (Yandle and Sons Ltd), 5 and 7 in Hurst are cottages and a workshop that likely date back to the 17th century, with modifications made in the 19th century. They are constructed from Ham stone ashlar and feature a double Roman clay tile roof with a coped north gable and brick chimney stacks. The buildings are two storeys high with random window arrangements.

No. 3 has been converted into offices and consists of two bays. It includes a throughway with double boarded gates to the left, leading to a timber-clad loft with a door and casement windows. To the right, there is a 2-light small-pane casement window above and three eight-pane sash windows grouped beneath a timber lintel. No. 5 is a single-bay structure with 2-light casements on both floors and a simple chamfered doorway to the right featuring a 19th-century door. No. 7 has a 3-light horizontal bar casement window below, a 2-light small-pane casement, and a square window above; the lower windows of Nos. 5 and 7 are both set into stone labels.

The interiors have not been seen. Approximately 3 meters east of Nos. 5 and 7 are front boundary railings set on low stone walls, featuring alternating small hoops and cast-iron leaf-arrowheads, with later timber gates opposite both doors. The railings curve back to the northeast corner of No. 5, enhancing the setting of the houses and the streetscape. This row of buildings is included primarily for its group value, contributing to a good collection of houses along this stretch of the road. Yandle and Sons Ltd., builders and wheelwrights, have operated from this location since 1906.
