Description

No. 1 Hurst is a detached house built in the early 19th century, likely incorporating earlier work. It features ham stone ashlar and has a hipped Welsh slate roof with a central brick chimney stack and a wide eaves overhang. Designed in a villa style, the house is two storeys high with a layout of three bays by two bays. The south entrance elevation, which is at right angles to the road, has three bays and includes a plinth, a band course, corner pilasters, and bracketted eaves. The 16-pane sash windows are set in plain openings with slightly segmental-arched heads. There is an early 20th-century timber, glass, and slate porch at the lower bay two.

The east elevation consists of two bays that match the south elevation, followed by a long two-storey extension of four bays extending northwards. This extension has a double Roman clay-tiled roof that is set lower than the main house. The walls are partly ashlar and partly cut and squared work. The first bay features a cambered-arched doorway with a 20th-century part-glazed door, and above it, to the right and at both levels of bay two, are small-pane casement windows. Bays three and four are wider, with bay three having a pair of tall narrow stable-type doors, while bay four has wide double doors.

About three metres east of the house, along the frontage and extending southwards for approximately 25 metres, there is a low stone wall topped with railings that have alternate hoops and cast arrowheads, standing about one metre high. A gate opposite the porch allows access, and the wall returns in stone at each end, contributing to the setting of the house. The premises are associated with Yandle and Sons Ltd., timber merchants, who were established here by 1906.
