Description

Hurst House is a detached house dating from the 18th century, with a 19th-century extension. The front is made of Ham stone ashlar, while the sides and rear are constructed from coursed squared rubble. The roof features plain clay tiles with an undulating profile over stone slate base courses, and it has coped gables with brick chimney stacks at the ends and in the middle.

The house is two storeys high and has five bays. It features plain mullioned windows set in simple architraves; most are three-light, except for the upper window in bay three, which is two-light, and the lower bay three has a part-glazed 19th-century door set in an architrave. This door is sheltered by an open stone porch supported by Tuscan columns and pilasters, topped with a full plain entablature and a flat roof.

There is a single-storey extension against the north gable, built of brick in Flemish bond with a hipped Welsh slate roof. This extension has composite plain sash windows in plain toothed Ham stone surrounds and a blocked doorway to the right. The interior has not been seen.

Approximately three metres west of the house, there are cast iron railings with cast bud finials set on a low stone wall, featuring curved braces and a matching gate opposite the doorway. These railings contribute to the setting of the house and enhance the streetscape.
