Description
No. 55 and its attached wing wall are a detached house dating from the mid-19th century. The house is constructed of finely dressed Ham stone ashlar, with a Welsh slate roof featuring stepped coped gables and stone chimney stacks. The double roof plan has ridges running at right angles to the road. The house is two storeys high with attics and originally comprised two bays by three bays. The south elevation is double-gabled, featuring gabletted and leaf finials. It has hollow chamfered mullioned windows with four-centred arched lights, arranged in angled bays with one and two lights, flat roofs, battlemented parapets to the ground floor, and two-light windows under square labels to the first floor. Single-light windows are similarly labelled at the attic level. The west elevation also features similar windows, all two-light with flat heads. All windows have a single horizontal bar. A cambered arched doorway, with a square label and a partially glazed door, is located in the lower centre bay. The interior was not inspected. Extending westwards from between the first and second bays is an ashlar wing wall, approximately 2.5 metres high, with a thin coping swept at the ends. This is accompanied by a pair of square gate piers, which are plinthed and have stepped, shallow pyramidal tops, and wooden gates. The wing wall and gate piers contribute to the overall setting of the house.
