Description
The gatepiers and wall fronting the road at West View date from the mid-19th century. They are constructed from red brick in Flemish bond, with ashlar limestone and red sandstone random rubble on the right side. The gatepiers stand about 1.5 meters high and are arranged in a central pair opposite the front door of West View, with another pair to the left for a carriage entrance and one to the right. Each gatepier features an intersecting ashlar pediment top, a moulded cornice, a squared brick shaft with ashlar quoins, and a chamfered brick and stone plinth. The wall is approximately one meter high and is set back at an angle on a four-course brick plinth, topped with chamfered limestone coping. It has one merlon to the right and two to the left of the central gatepiers. The wall continues to the left, designed similarly in red sandstone random rubble, which returns as a garden wall with one gatepier at the angle, also in red sandstone random rubble, featuring a moulded cap and plinth. The 20th-century gates are not included in the listing. The wall and gatepiers are well-executed and display a sophisticated design.
