Description
The Bishop's Lydeard War Memorial is a First World War memorial dedicated in 1921, which was later altered to include the names of those who fell in the Second World War. It is made of Ham Stone and stands approximately 3.1 meters high. The monument is designed in the form of a Latin cross, inspired by the Cross of Sacrifice created by Sir Reginald Blomfield in 1918. It is positioned on an octagonal plinth that rests on a three-stepped platform. The plinth features plaques made of Portland stone honoring the First World War dead, with a central inscription that reads, 'IN GLORIOUS/ MEMORY OF THOSE/ OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES FOR THEIR/ KING AND COUNTRY/ 1914 - 1918'. Additional bronze plaques have been added to the upper step of the base to commemorate the Second World War fallen. The memorial is situated within a small enclosure that is paved and gravelled, surrounded by walls of Ham stone.
