Description

This is a late 18th-century gateway providing access to the churchyard of St Mary's Church from West Street. Constructed of red sandstone ashlar with white limestone dressings, the gateway stands approximately 3 metres high. It features a single arched opening with a flat top. The right side of the cornice is damaged. The quoins and surround to the opening are rusticated, and there's a white limestone archivolt with chamfered corners to both the archivolt and jambs. A keystone and white limestone plinth are also present. The wrought iron gate is arched to fit the opening, featuring simple uprights, one of which is damaged. A similar doorway is located in the adjacent wall across West Street.
