Description
The North Gate and adjoining boundary wall of the churchyard of St Mary is a gateway and boundary wall dating from the late 19th century. It is constructed from local stone rubble and features rusticated crenellated coping along the top. The gate posts are made of red sandstone ashlar and are square in section, with arch-headed panels on each side, plain caps, and rounded tops. The original cast iron gate is included in the design. Inside the wall, to the left of the gateway, there is a 17th-century Beerstone plaque set into the wall. This plaque features a round-headed panel with a carved skull and crossbones alongside an hourglass, and the spandrels are adorned with carved foliage.
