Description

Fossend Canal Bridge is a road bridge over the Grand Western Canal, built around 1814. It is constructed from large coursed blocks of limestone and features a parapet made of red sandstone ashlar. The bridge has a single span with an elliptical, almost round-headed, plain arch. At road level, there is a projecting plain stringcourse that follows the humpback shape of the road. The parapet above has rounded coping and curves outward at both ends, where there are shallow terminal piers that also project outward. This section of the Grand Western Canal was opened in 1814.
