Description
The gateway to the churchyard of St Mary and St Aldhelm's Abbey Church is a late 18th-century structure, with the year 1789 scratched into the impost. It is built from limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a brick arch, although the roof is not visible. The gateway is two stories high and has a two-window range. The design is in the Gothick style, with a symmetrical front that includes a round-headed through arch. The imposts are linked to a cill band and key, with plain doorways on either side. The right doorway has a studded door, and there are small Y-tracery windows above the band. The structure is topped with a flat cornice and an ashlar crenellated parapet. The interior has not been inspected but is recorded as forming one-man lockups.
