Description
This is an inn, now a restaurant, dating from the late 14th or 15th century, with extensions added in the 20th century. It is constructed of limestone rubble, originally with a timber-framed jettied first floor, and has a stone-tiled roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a four-window front. The ground floor projects and has a 20th-century front with a shallow tiled roof and a central doorway. The ground floor has leaded lattice casement windows, and the rear has two dormers. An east-facing front includes a half-octagonal stair turret with a loop window and the remains of a Gothic arch to a former doorway.
The interior has been extensively altered. Evidence remains of the original jettied front, including a moulded bressumer support near the stairs, an inner doorway within a moulded former window head, and part of an ogee-headed niche. The first floor features stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, jowl posts and a stone fireplace, and a collar-truss roof with wind braces to the lower register and butt purlins, which were repaired in the 1960s. The cellar contains a semi-circular tunnel vault that extends beneath the road, and a well.
Attached to the rear is a curved rubble wall that encloses the rear area.
Historical records suggest that the building was formerly associated with the Abbey and, until 1924, was known as the Green Dragon Inn. Local tradition tells of a blocked-in holy stoup where the "Apostle Spoon" was discovered.
